Network connections and PowerShell modules

To effectively deploy and manage Cayosoft Administrator, ensure proper network configurations and required PowerShell modules are in place for different product connections and environments.

Product Connections

Connection Description
Cayosoft Administrator Console
    • Local Console (WCF Connection)

    The local console uses a WCF (Windows Communication Foundation) connection instead of HTTPS. This option is lightweight and designed for direct access. Local in this context means that the console is installed on the same machine as the Cayosoft Administrator Service, allowing for direct communication without relying on IIS.

    • Remote Console (HTTPS via IIS Application)

    The Cayosoft Administrator remote console relies on an IIS application and requires an HTTPS connection for secure communication. This configuration ensures encrypted data transfer between the console and the server.

    • Switching Remote Console to Legacy WCF Connection

    For specific deployment scenarios, it is possible to configure the remote console to use a legacy WCF connection instead of HTTPS.

    However, note that this change must be reapplied after each product upgrade, as updates reset the connection settings to the default HTTPS configuration.
Web Portal

  • External Access: If accessing the Web Portal from outside your network, ensure your firewall allows HTTPS traffic.
Azure VM Requirements

  • When deploying Cayosoft Administrator in an Azure Virtual Machine (VM), additional configurations may be needed to expose the IIS application to external users. Learn more in: Cloud deployment.

Managing Active Directory

To manage Active Directory (AD) effectively, ensure the following components are in place:

Module Description
Windows Management Framework (WMF) 5.1 Should be available by default on most modern Windows Servers.
PowerShell Gallery Module Installed by default.
Active Directory (AD) Module for PowerShell Required for querying and managing AD objects.
Connection to Domain Controller A direct connection is necessary for Cayosoft Administrator to manage AD.

Managing On-premises Exchange

Module Description
Network Connection Specific ports must be open for Cayosoft Administrator to connect to your on-prem Exchange server. Learn more in: Cayosoft Administrator URLs and IP address ranges.
Single Forest Support

Managing Exchange Servers for remote recipients

  • In hybrid configurations where all mailboxes reside in Exchange Online, Cayosoft Administrator supports modifying Active Directory attributes for synced accounts. These changes are made directly in AD without requiring on-premises Exchange servers, as hybrid synchronization updates these attributes in the cloud.

  • Direct Attribute Mapping. This feature is designed for scenarios where no active on-premises mailboxes exist. It allows administrators to manage recipient-related attributes in AD directly, eliminating the need for a running Exchange server for such operations.

    RECOMMENDED: For environments with remote recipients, Cayosoft recommends using the Enabled for remote recipients only using Exchange Management Tools option. For more information, see the Exchange Management Overview article.

Load balancer support for On-Premises Exchange Servers

  • In environments where on-premises Exchange servers are still required, Cayosoft Administrator can work with a load balancer to route traffic to multiple Exchange servers within the home forest. This setup ensures high availability and fault tolerance.

    NOTE: All Exchange servers behind the load balancer must run a supported version to ensure compatibility.

Recommendations for large-scale environments

  • For hybrid setups with remote mailboxes, use direct attribute mapping to streamline recipient attribute updates without relying on Exchange server calls.

  • Configure the system to align with hybrid needs, ensuring critical attributes are updated efficiently without excess overhead.

Managing Exchange Online

Module Description
With On-Prem Exchange Set up Cayosoft Administrator Service for Exchange Online using the appropriate configuration for cloud-based environments. Unlike on-prem Exchange, Exchange Online does not require a dedicated extension, and configuration differs based on cloud-specific settings.
Without On-Prem Exchange Follow the guidelines in the Exchange Management Overview article for configurations. Direct attribute updates are not recommended for this configuration.

Managing Microsoft 365 (M365) Services

For proper management of M365 services, Cayosoft requires connections to:

  • Azure Active Directory (Entra ID) or Microsoft 365 tenant

  • Exchange Online

  • SharePoint Online

  • Microsoft Teams

Managing other services

  • Google Workspace: Cayosoft Administrator supports managing Google Workspace accounts and groups.

  • AD Lightweight Directory Services (AD LDS): Cayosoft Administrator can manage AD LDS environments.

  • Okta: Integration for two-factor authentication using Okta identity services.

  • Workday: Support for managing Workday in connected workflows.

By configuring the required connections and ensuring proper PowerShell module installations, you can achieve full operational readiness for Cayosoft Administrator in various environments.
